Who we are, what we do, and why we do it

I suspect you’re wondering how you got here. Perhaps this site was recommended by a fellow bunny enthusiast, or you found this place via a Google search. Whichever it was, that doesn’t really matter, but now you’re here, why not take a look at the reason why we’re here.

Hoppyhope is a self-funded sanctuary that devotes every spare second of its time to the well-being of rabbits. Founded back in the 1990’s (yes, we’ve been doing it for that long), we originally started out with one hutch, and a friendly chap we named Harvey. Having both been owners of rabbits in our youth, we decided to adopt our first one together as he needed a home. What we didn’t realise is that this would trigger a deep desire we both shared to try and make a difference to the bunny world where we could. For over 20 years, we’ve been adopting bunnies from all walks of life, ranging from broken homes to those who selfishly decided it was simply too much effort to look after their pet. Then we encountered the other side of these antipodean boundaries. The side where neglect and cruelty play a pivotal role in the downfall of these amazing animals. We wanted to make a difference, and however small it may appear to the outside world, we’ve literally been to hell and back caring for sick, injured, or simply unwanted bunnies. Since inception, our private rescue centre has been 100% funded by us, and over time has grown both in size, and population. Take a look at the statistics below, and you’ll gain a realistic insight into what it takes to keep the centre running.

After 20 years of remaining in the background, we’ve decided to bring what we do to the attention of others, raising awareness and helping owners in their journey at the same time as we continue ours – and hopefully, with your help, we’ll make a difference.

The name of hoppyhope.org was my wife’s creation. The hoppy part is obvious, but the “hope” originates from the word’s actual meaning – “a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen”. This is the strict mantra we follow. We are 100% dedicated to this cause, and hope that you will find it in your hearts to donate to what we believe is a worthy charity that spends every waking hour, every spare penny, and every ounce of blood, sweat, and tears (and there have been thousands of those, believe me) that we have to give to help rehabilitate and nurture these wonderful animals back to health.

We make a difference – all rabbits we take in are never abandoned. They stay with us until they pass. Any help to keep this amazing initiative going is welcomed. It doesn’t need to be financial. All animal lovers will understand what I mean by this. We’re not here to make money, but we are here to do whatever it takes to make life for bunnies better.

If you’re reading this and at the same time wondering how we can be so passionate about bunnies, this next line should say it all.

Anyone who doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about having a bunny has never owned one.
